“The characteristic of genuine heroism is its persistency. All men have wandering impulses, fits and starts of generosity. But when you have resolved to be great, abide by yourself, and do not weakly try to reconcile yourself with the world. The heroic cannot be the common, nor the common the heroic.” – unknown
Heroism is defined as the act of putting others first, even at your own peril. As public servants, we are constantly embarking on a thankless endeavor brought by incredibly high expectations demanded by the public from us. With this pandemic, our callings become more challenging more than ever. It requires more rigors and sacrifice on our part even at the expense of our personal and family’s well-being. In this calling, we learn to put our personal interest aside in favor of the public we are sworn to serve.
Indeed, ours is not a profession for people who desire commendation and constant affirmation but for those who are willing to accept thanklessness and lack of appreciation. The fact of the matter is, the reward of this effort is not quantifiable by consideration our human minds can fathom, but with the impact we made into the lives of the people we are dedicated to help.
My dear public servants and fellow officers, as we now see the light at the end of this pandemic, a passage from the scriptures echoes in my mind that says, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” Truly, more will be asked from us public servants. But again, don’t lose heart. Even though the challenges ahead seem insurmountable, nothing is impossible to achieve if we set aside our own personal interest and to work unceasingly with the end goal of helping our countrymen and serving them with all our might. Let us continue to put others first in our quest to fulfill our mandates.
I would like to extend a warm thanks to my family here in BJMP-CALABARZON for all your hard work and dedication as we continuously pray for each other’s protection and strength. With complete faith and submission to God, we look forward to the end of this pandemic and to the things He will generously abound us.
As Filipinos and public servants, let us be the heroes that we desperately need, the heroes that will gladly serve and relentlessly dedicate their lives in pursuit of providing a better life for others.
